Went to the Philly Alternative Comic Con last weekend. Pretty chill, lots of cool people and comics! Of course, I got a jam going. Philly Cheese Steaks were alright, but nothing special.

Tons of people in here, but a few I remember are Victor Kerlow, Josh Burggraf, Josh Bayer, Edwin Vasquez, Mike Sgier, beyond that check the comic alot are written. It's hard to remember everyone's names! If you were in the comic and want to be credited, let me know.

They don't really call him a wizard, but he can fly and shoot fireballs and has magical powers and is part of some diabolical scheme to bring about the coming of evil and destruction of the world. So I say he's a wizard.

First entry on the new blog! Hopefully I can keep this one more eventful than my last one... Which Incidentally, you could be reading this on too, through the magic of computers!
Inspired somewhat by seeing the cool stuff at Draw-Bridge, I started doing warm-up drawings before I start recently. Yesterday I had a Tiepolo book (G.B. not Domenico, if you know Tiepolos) sitting on the desk, so I just drew from that. I also drew it in pen. My pal Victor draws in pen and everytime I see one of his drawings it makes me wish I could pull it off all the time too.
I couldn't find a link to the original painting and I don't feel like scanning my book, so here it is.

MOCCA 2010 Report + Jam!

What's up everyone, MOCCA 2010 was pretty sweet. Since they moved it to April it wasn't nearly as hot as last year, and that was definitely a huge plus. Personally, I still prefer the old location at the Puck building, the layout was more appealing and I like having 2 different floors of stuff. But I can understand that the Armory is a bigger space, and the Puck building probably isn't cheap to rent for a weekend. I had a good time as always, and I think it went pretty well, though more than a few of my friends exhibitng didn't really even break even selling stuff there, which is a shame. Not sure exactly if there was a smaller turnout this year, or if it looked about the same as last year, but I'm leaning toward the former...
Anyway, here's the MOCCA 2010 jam, which some of you might even be in!

RECAP: Mavin was asked to help find a villager's daughter, who was captured by Jaquio. Upon entering his lair, he is met by Umbra, The Shadow Wizard. Meanwhile, the girl who was trapped has escaped her cell and is out exploring the castle. She is spotted by a guard and falls through into a mysterious hole into the wall. Through the skin of his teeth, Mavin defeats Umbra and is heading up deeper into the castle.

Hey, this is a comic I drew one night after hanging out with some friends, on the way home from the train and sort of drunk. So don't ask why anything looks like anything, that's what I thought I should draw at that moment. I know everyone liked the last comic I did about me, so I decided to post this. ( Also Fiffe demanded it!) Oh, and the dialogue is typed since it was illegible chicken scratch before.

Hey to anyone (almost no one) who sees when I put stuff up on my livejournal! I'm starting a comic strip, well... because. Actually it's to get myself working constantly on something so that when I'm not doing the strip I'll still be in working mode. Anyway I'm planning on a 3 time a week schedule, Monday, Wednesday, Friday... The strip does have a name yet, but my codename for the project is "Red Sparrow", until I figure something out.

After Deep 6, I went out with Fiffe, Dean and Simon to some outdoor bar, and they had me drink some beer because I've never had any. It tastes like seltzer. Anyway, I was working on a new Dan Freeman page as well and it should be up soon. Peace Out!

I thought up this crazy comic idea in this small sketchbook of mine I draw comics in on the train. I thought it was so good after two pages in my sketchbook, that I decided I'm just going to make it into a full blown comic. This is an adaption of the 1st page from the sketches. After the second one, it'll all be brand new (off the top of my head). I hope to get at least a page a week done...

I penciled this pretty ridiculously loose, but I figured it came out of a sketchbook so why not keep that aesthetic. Anyway, I'll try to get more up so, I know you must be intrigued...

I am not shitting you either... This is EXACTLY how it happened!
Overall it was pretty funny if anything and it's still cool to say I met him at all. I knew it was over when he came to the door with his shirt half unbuttoned... But... what else was I gonna say at that point?

I know Fiffe looks kind of.. jolly, but I left it cause it's pretty hilarious.

A few things that didn't make the cut:
when I was standing at the window, some trendy hipster type dudes were talking about going to a party as they left the room next door.
I knocked once and waited, then I thought I heard rustling paper, so I knocked again after a few minutes...

Too bad me and Ditko couldn't be buddies... Maybe if he knew my name was STEVE too...

My dad suggested I try again next year, see if he remembers me, maybe I'll get a few more words, if only "Why do you keep coming here?"

This is a particularly notable (interesting, whatever) one, because I inked it all in nib. (I used a Gillot 659 if anyone's interested)
Felt weird at first, but I think it came out ok... Gotta improve my lettering...

Colored it as well... Thought flat , simple color was befitting the character...

The comics were all done in this little lined pad I had. I thought it was a bad choice afterwards but looking at it now, I think it freed people from being too picky with drawings...

MoCCA Jam Comic 2008!

It is my custom to do a jam comic at each comic convention I go to. Of course MoCCA was no exception this year and I have scanned it for the pleasure of the internet populous.

It started off very weird... (You can thank Pedro siliconneedleCamargo for that) but I think this came out pretty ok for a jam...

Page 4 didn't get finished, sadly it's cause I was only there on Sunday... could've been longer. In any case, there it is! i have 3 other jams from previous cons that I'll get up here at some point, for those who are interested. At the very end there, Fred Harper was trying to pull EVERYTHING from the previous few pages together... and he didn't look too close and assumed that Joe's tongue close up was a huge wave.... If you were confused.

I asked Fiffe to give me something in particular to do over the last week before I came back to Deep Six again on Thursday. He said "draw the Vulture with a bag of money." So... here it is?

This was a composite of 3 pieces of paper, because I didn't have a piece of vellum big enough to do the wings on one. There are also 2 alternative ones, one was a sketch, but I liked it so I inked it anyway.

and to read the other text,

Fiffe had actually asked me to watercolor it, but I'm not sure if my ink is waterproof ( the bottle is in Japanese) and I was having too much fun inking with my new brush to have it get potentially ruined when water hit it. This is on vellum paper by the way, if the dry brush is very noticeable. Anyway, I computer colored one to have something in color.

My First real painting

I did my first real painting tonight. I had taken painting classes back in the first year at SVA, but they didn't really teach me anything, so i hadn't really painted anything much, just kind of blocks of color and then drawing with a darker color and a small brush, like a colored drawing. My roomate Miller is a painter, and I asked him to show me how to do something. ( I will admit that this was not without his help.) Was pretty fun though, gotta keep trying it out.

If you are wondering what it's painted on, its a piece of scrap Bristol I had used to test brushes and nibs.
I used a picture at random from getty images as inspiration, basically, I changed it as I went. Oh, and these are oils.

Edit: a friend of mine reminded me that this isn't my "1st" painting, because I had tried to paint something about a year or two ago in oils as well.

Old Stuff

I decided to scan in and put up some old, rushed jam comics I did last year. There was an assignment for Tom Hart's class to do 100 pages of comics in 2 weeks. No requirements, just 100 pages. Since it was the last 2 weeks of the semester, most everyone blew it off, but I really got into it, and I got the closest to 100 pages (80 or so). (edit: Tom Hart reminds me that I I was actually 2nd, a few pages behind someone else...) These are a few of the ones I can look back on and really like or think are funny.

This last one is my personal favorite. Who knows why, though...
